Approach

Approach

The cooperation with the end users in Scandinavia provided a possibility to develop a reliable physical model possible to implement on-line in process applications.

In short, the goals were to:

  • Describe both reversible (steam generation) and irreversible defibration and fiber development from a dynamic perspective to get stabilized throughput control, i.e. a higher production.

  • Describe the material transport in the refining zone.

  • Find operating conditions where risk of fiber pad breakdown (resulting in excessive fiber shortening) exist and how to avoid such irreversible conditions when applying high production rates and/or increased refining intensity;

  • Describe the refining bars impact on fibers at different operating conditions, like uneven fiber distribution, pulsation in fiber pad pressure gradients (in both tangential and radial directions) changes of the fiber pad properties for different chemistry, alternative pre-treatment, refining temperature (fiber softening) and segment design.
