Quality control - QCtrl
Besides the consistency profile other internal variables like fiber residence time, forces between fiber bundles and refining bars, motor load split in different refining zone regions can be derived as well. This knowledge can be used in a comprehensive way to estimate pulp and handsheet property variations and thereby select a stabilized energy efficient operating point.
This can be performed using the control concept "LESS - Low Energy Strategic Systems", which consists of four major products:
Temperature profile control - TCtrl
The profile is measured in the refining zone using a sensor array designed for fast dynamic response. It is placed between two refining segments to get access to the steam temperature. It is essential to measure the complete temperature profile to find the maximum temperature which defines the position where the steam evacuates both forwards towards the periphery of the refining segments and backwards towards the inlet. This position can be seen as a stagnation point and to stabilize the fiber pad inside the refining zone it is important to control both position and temperature level. The concept has been validated in both SD- and CD-refiners.
Consistency profile control - CCtrl
The consistency cannot be measured inside the refining zone. However, thanks to the temperature profile the refining energy balance is available using a physical model where the complete consistency profile can be derived as a soft sensor for all types of refiners. This also means that the consistency can be controlled individually in:
A. the flat zone and conical zone in CD-refiners;
B. the two parallel refining zones in Twin-refiners;
using the dilution water fed to each refining zone.
